Course objectives
The aim is to understand the origins and the context of the development of European art in the context of the development of European culture, philosophy and general social history.
Learning outcomes
-Define basic stylistic and stylistic tendencies in European art
-Characterize basic means of expression of individual types of art in a given style and style
-To bring this information into the wider contexts of cultural and social development in Europe
Syllabus
  • 1. Definition of basic terms - introduction to systematic issues Art, philosophy, aesthetics, art theory, means of expression in art, ars and techne as basic creative principles. Extensive and intensive transitions in art (concept of J. Volek).
  • 2. Philosophy and thought context of the ancient world Definition and characteristics of periods; contemporary philosophical and aesthetic approaches (cosmological, anthropomorphic and psychological, mimesis), main personalities of philosophy and aesthetics (Pythagoreans; Socrates, Plato, Aristotle).
  • 3. Ancient art Comparison of three development stages of antiquity in the field of art: archaic, Attic and Hellenistic periods; development in the field of individual art forms; architecture and building orders – Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, sculpture, dramatic arts, music.
  • 4. Medieval art Definition and characteristics of the period, typical features, conflicting relationship to antiquity; the most important personalities from the point of view of the philosophy of art, Tertullianus, Chrysostomos, Augustine, Boëthius, Aquinas.
  • 5. Romanesque art Definition and characteristics of the historical period, philosophical and aesthetic contexts. Definition of the Romanesque style and its manifestations in architecture and other types of art.
  • 6. Gothic art Definition and characteristics of the historical period, main features and mutual comparison in means of expression in the visual arts, verbal arts and music.
  • 7. Transformation of society during the Renaissance Philosophical and aesthetic ideals of Renaissance art (anthropocentrism, humanism, sensualism); developments in the field of science and culture, historical and territorial context. The legacy of the most important personalities of the time for the development of European society (Morus, Bacon, Copernicus, Kepler, Galilei, Bruno, Luther, Gutenberg, etc.).
  • 8. Renaissance art Main developments in individual types of art, key representatives and their works, specifications within individual countries. The development of music in the Renaissance period with regard to the types and manifestations of vocal polyphony and Franco-Flemish schools.
  • 9. Mannerism Basic characteristics of Mannerism and its definition as a transitional style between Renaissance and Baroque, manifestations in individual types of art, main representatives. Manner as a stylistic element in art.
  • 10. Baroque art Definition and characteristics of the historical period, temporal and territorial stratification; baroque as a complex style (illusionism and counter-reformation); main features and comparison of means of expression within individual types of art (visual arts, architecture), aesthetics and philosophy in the Baroque.
  • 11. Stylistic tendencies in the development of the music of the Baroque period The issue of the onset of the Baroque style in music and its coexistence with the fading of Renaissance music, stylistic differentiation and the development of music in Italy in the 17th and 18th centuries, the specifics of musical development in France and the German cultural space, the synthesis of partial musical styles in the High Baroque period.
  • 12. Rococo art Characteristics of the historical period, definition of the rococo style, main features, mutual comparison of means of expression in various types of art (visual arts, literature, architecture), the issue of applying the concept of rococo to the development of music - characteristics of the gallant style.
  • 13. The art of classicism and its context in the French Enlightenment Basic definition of classicism as an artistic style and its manifestations in individual types of art; defining the basic ideas of the French Enlightenment and their impact on the development of European art of the given time (Voltaire, D. Diderot, J. J. Rousseau).
  • 14. Comparison of the concept of the English school of taste and German speculative aesthetics and philosophy in the period of classicism The conceptual essence of the ideological legacy of the given cultural circles, specifics, differences from the French approach; English school of taste (A. C. Shaftesbury, F. Hutcheson, E. Young, J. Addison, E. Burke, H. Home, D. Hume); German cultural circle (G.E. Lessing, J.J. Winckelmann, I. Kant, A.G. Baumgarten, J.W. Goethe, F. Schiller).
  • 15. The Art of Romanticism Definition and characteristics of the period, including pre-romanticism, specifics affecting the form of art in the field of social development; the phenomenon of national schools and folklorism; manifestations of romanticism as an artistic style in individual types of art.
  • 16. The rise of modernism, impressionism and art nouveau The disintegration of a unified artistic style and the emergence of stylistic plurality at the beginning of the 20th century, general cultural, social and historical contexts of the given time, impressionism and art nouveau - characteristics.
  • 17. Stylistic tendencies in painting of the first half of the 20th century Basic conceptual trends, key expressions and representatives – Fauvism, Expressionism, Cubism, Abstraction, Surrealism, Futurism.
  • 18. Architecture, sculpture and music in the art of the first half of the 20th century Characteristics of new stylistic tendencies and their mutual comparison; Gaudí, Bauhaus, Le Corbusier, art deco, Epstein, Giacometti; The development of styles and compositional techniques with regard to the main European musical centers (Vienna, Paris) and the most important composers.
  • 19. Postmodernism and its manifestations in art Relation to modernity and avant-garde, basic features, issue of positive definition of postmodernity, character of postmodern work. Manifestations in individual types of art, main representatives and key theoretical concepts, conceptual art and its specific manifestations (happening, performance, etc.).
  • 20. Differentiation and specifics of artificial and non-artificial music Terminological and functional definition of AH and NAH, historical development of the understanding of NAH, issues of kitsch and mass culture; the reproducibility of the work of art (T. W. Adorno).

Další požadavky pro získání atestu:
Úspěšné absolvování zápočtového testu/ústní zkoušky.

Podmínky pro připuštění k zápočtovému testu/zkoušce:
Docházka a ISP:
-Veškeré hodiny neabsolvované kontaktní formou je potřeba nahradit samostudiem spočívajícím ve studiu zadané literatury (příp. poslechu doporučených ukázek).
-Podrobné informace pro realizaci samostudia (včetně všech položek povinné odborné literatury) jsou v návaznosti na konkrétní výukové hodiny (resp. v nich probrané tematické okruhy) uvedeny v Metodické opoře, která je zavěšena v IS JAMU.
-Pro udělení atestu na konci ZS/LS je potřeba splnit docházku v minimálním rozsahu 50 % realizovaných přednášek za semestr.
-Pokud student z objektivních a jednoznačně omluvitelných důvodů nemůže toto kvorum dosáhnout, musí na začátku semestru požádat o udělení ISP, a to formou příslušného formuláře (v případě studentů pobývajících po celý semestr na zahraniční studijní stáži lze po vzájemné domluvě formulář nahradit písemným potvrzením pedagoga, zaslaným v kopii na stud. odd. HF).
-Mezní termín pro podání žádosti o ISP je 31. října (v ZS), resp. 28. února (v LS).
-Podmínkou pro udělení ISP je projednání důvodů žádosti s pedagogem daného předmětu a jeho obsahové splnění – samostudium všech neabsolvovaných výkladových okruhů dle odborné literatury a pokynů uvedených v Metodické opoře k předmětu.
-Ověření znalostí získaných samostudiem bude součástí zápočtových testů (Dějiny umění I ZS, Dějiny umění II ZS, LS), resp. součástí rozpravy v rámci ústní zkoušky (Dějiny umění I, LS).
