Course objectives
The course introduces contemporary social scientific thinking about art and shows the possibilities of its application to artistic research. The core of interpretation and seminar discussions is based on a critical reflection on art in modernity, especially in the late-modern situation in relation to important issues of social stratification, politics and economics. Particular emphasis is placed on issues of the construction and reproduction of artistic status and taste.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:
- understand the basic concepts of sociology, psychology and cultural anthropology focused on art
- be oriented in the basic themes of critical reflection on art in the late modern situation
- understand the relationship between art, society, economics and politics
- apply social science theories to their own artistic research.
