Course objectives
Graduates have a basic understanding of contract and employment law, with an emphasis on areas relevant to theatre production and stage technology in practice.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to: understand and apply fundamental legal principles and legal terminology, particularly in the field of contract law, especially the various types of contract; independently resolve common legal issues in the field of contractual relationships; identify the relevant legislation and other legal sources for a specific situation and work with them; work with texts of contracts, identify basic risks and recognise when it is necessary to consult a lawyer; draft the text of a standard contract using a template; deal with labour and employment matters.
Syllabus
  • Law of Obligations - general part:
    a. explanation of basic concepts (obligation, contract, debt, receivable, creditor, debtor, joint obligations etc.);
    b. contracts and their conclusion (principles, contract in favour of a third party, on a future contract, unnamed, consumer);
    c. changes in obligations (assignment of debt, accession to debt, agreement, default etc.);
    d. securing obligations (contractual penalty, guarantee, acknowledgement of debt, collateral transfer of right etc.);
    e. termination of obligations (performance, withdrawal, notice, waiver, settlement, set-off etc,);
  • named contracts under the Civil Code (essentials, mutual differentiation):
    a. donation;
    b. contract of sale, contract for work;
    c.transfer of a thing for the use of another;
    d. contracts of command type, etc.;
  • Labor Law:
    a. concept, subjects, principles, object;
    b. sources of labor law, relationship to the civil law;
    c. employment and labor contract (establishment, duration, amendments, termination, ancillary arrangements);
    d. working hours, travel, holidays, renumeration etc.;
    e. agreements on work performed outside the employment relationship (requirements, differentiations, limitations).

Teaching methods
As part of their self-study, students work with, amongst other things, an interactive syllabus in which individual topics are summarised and through which they have access to further study materials. During lectures, key topics are presented or explored in greater depth, using specific examples drawn from cultural practice. As part of the seminar-based teaching, students work on set assignments (typically analysing specific situations from a legal perspective, analysing the text of contracts, legislation or other legal documents, and exercises to help them grasp legal concepts, etc.). Each task is followed by an assessment, generally involving the presentation of students’ own views, group discussion and the presentation of arguments. During the semester, students complete ongoing assignments set as part of the seminars and submit three written assignments, which assess their ability to work independently with legal texts and to draft them (e.g. a contract based on a template).
Assessment methods
Participation min. 70% of the seminars;
completion of 3 interim assignments and other activities at seminars;
oral exam (further instructions can be found in the interactive syllabus).
