Course objectives
Clarify one’s personal direction in dramaturgy and directing, as well as one’s working method for further study and professional practice. Develop the ability to construct and recognize a dramatic situation as opposed to merely illustrating an idea. Practice translating analysis into stage action and composition; refine the communicative power and clarity of scenes. Cultivate collaborative work: assigning tasks, leading an ensemble, reflecting on the process, and accepting feedback.
Learning outcomes

Upon graduation, students will be able to:


conduct a basic dramaturgical and directorial analysis of a text or situation,


identify and create a dramatic situation,


design and implement staging solutions that are clear to both the ensemble and the audience,


lead collaboration within a creative group and provide feedback.



Syllabus

Introduction:


Dramaturgical issues and initial perspective; basic concepts (situation, action, conflict).


Analytical tools for dramaturgical and directing work: nodes of meaning, motifs, montage, rhythm.


Translating analysis into the stage: mise-en-scène, composition, working with imagery and action.


Creation of short scenes (3rd year – direction; 2nd year – acting ensemble).


Collective analyses and “revisions”: feedback, redefining intent, precision of means.


Stylization vs. illustration: shifting emphasis, working with pauses, the dramaturgy of silence and tempo.


Character as a Function of Situation: Action Vocabulary, Subtext, Behavior.


Review of scenes and preparation for the final presentation; summary of individual recommendations.

Teaching methods
A practical seminar based on a series of case studies selected in consultation with students based on their required reading of world drama
Assessment methods
Students are evaluated on an ongoing basis based on their performance and preparedness in seminars. Given the concurrent group work, student participation is also evaluated; the expected-required attendance rate is 90%.

Verifying and defining fundamental points of reference in dramaturgical and directorial thinking (DaV). Dramaturgy and directing as ways of grasping reality, analyzing it, and creating through specific theatrical tools. Fundamental dramaturgical questions, possibilities for dramaturgical-directorial analysis, and defining an initial dramaturgical stance. Practical dramaturgy in the rehearsal process; translating circumstances, motifs, and meanings into a coherent scene. Third-year students develop their own interpretation of “regular text” (building on the seminar on regular text); second-year students assist as an acting ensemble and learn by observation. Joint analyses, “revisions” of scenes, and engagement with the tools of directing: situation, action, conflict, mise-en-scène, montage, rhythm, composition, character, pause, motif, shift in emphasis, and stylization.
