Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with historical insight into the field of literature for children and youth from the beginning to the end of the 1980s. From the point of view of theory and history, students will get to know key authors and their works and basic terminology.
In connection with the field of study, attention is also paid to literature as a starting point for theater work with children and youth. The subject is also focused on the possibilities of using literature for children and young people when working with a children's theater group or theater for children (searching for themes, subjects, genre, production key, etc.).
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- orient yourself in the historical development and basic terminology of literature for children and youth;
- characterize key works of literature for children and youth and define their value with the involvement of a critical approach;
- name the possibilities and risks of the selected literary work for the theatre work;
- analyze and reflect on selected literary works for children and youth and apply this knowledge when choosing a literary model and translating it into a stage form.

  • 1) Introduction to the subject
  • 2) Folklore/folk tale and its author's adaptations in the European and Czech environment
  • 3) Myths, legends, and fairy tales in individual geographical regions of the world
  • 4) Formation of the author's fairy tale in the European context
  • 5) An author's fairy tale in a Czech setting
  • 6) Narrative prose of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries in world and Czech literature
  • 7) Narrative prose with a child hero after 1945 until the end of the 1980s
  • 8) Genre contamination, nonsense, play, and humor in children's literature in the second half of the 20th century
  • 9) Poetry for children from the end of the 19th century to the end of the 1980s
  • 10) A literary work as a starting point for theatrical creation
