“The history of queer theater from ancient origins to modern performance art in a clear excursion” The history of theater culture has been connected with the queer community and culture since ancient times. Although the laws of Christian society suppressed queer expressions, traces of LGBT+ culture reappear in the Renaissance environment. It gradually revives in various fragments over the next centuries, culminating in the trial of Oscar Wilde at the end of the 19th century. His legacy influenced the beginning of the 20th century, when the culture of female and male impersonators developed and the first dramatic texts were created transferring the stories of queer people to large and small stages. Several productions were created in the Czechoslovak interwar theater that aroused considerable audience response. However, the war and post-war events significantly changed society's attitude towards the queer community, and so further more obvious manifestations of queer theater appeared only in the 1960s and after the Stonewall Riots. During this time, the first companies with queer dramaturgy were created, premieres of dramas accepted by the wider society were performed, and the first musicals with queer themes were also performed. The lecture will introduce key phenomena, significant personalities and works that shaped the history of theater and foreshadowed the current expansion of queer themes into performing arts.
