The book highlights Bohuslav Martinů's relationship with his family, which provided him with the necessary security and support throughout his life. His close family circle consisted of his parents and two siblings. The composer's father, Ferdinand Martinů, was a trained shoemaker. At the time of the composer's birth, he worked as a porter in the church of St. James, and thanks to this service, he obtained an apartment built in the tower. Bohuslav Martinů was born there and lived there with his family for the next twelve years. His mother was a very important person in the composer's life; even as an adult, Bohuslav felt the need to consult her about some of his steps. His brother František was an academic painter, mainly devoted to the sacred decoration of church interiors. His sister Marie made a living as a ladies' dressmaker in her own fashion salon. Despite the fact that B. Martinů spent more than half of his life abroad, he returned to his family in Polička every year for the summer months and spent them there regularly until 1938. After the outbreak of World War II and the change of regime in his homeland in 1948, circumstances made it permanently impossible for him to return home. However, he remained in constant contact with his family by correspondence. This publication attempts to bring to light the fates of his closest relatives, who had so far remained hidden in the shadow of the famous composer, based on preserved archival documents.
