Emil Pirchan, architekt, jevištní výtvarník, dramatik a romanopisec, pedagog a aktivní účastník společenského dění, příslušel k populaci moravských Němců žijících na přelomu 19. a 20. století v Brně. Tvůrčí zázemí rodiny portrétního malíře i německé prostředí ho prioritně směřovalo k celoživotním vazbám na kulturu německou. Navzdory tomu neztrácel ani po roce 1918 kontakt s kulturním děním na území nově vzniklé republiky. Pirchanova profesní dráha scénografa zahrnuje kromě spolupráce s německými scénami Československa i pět výprav pro česká divadla. Dochované scénické návrhy nabízí pohled na proměny Pirchanovy tvorby během vymezeného dvacetiletí, a žánrová i tematická šíře odkrývá invenci výtvarníka při hledání tvaru adekvátního předloze.

Emil Pirchan, an architect, stage designer, dramatist and novelist, pedagogue and an active participant in contemporary social life belonged to the population of the Moravian Germans who lived in Brno in late 19th and 20th centuries. As he was born to the German speaking family of a portrait painter, his background predestied him to be tied to German culture. Contrary to that, even after 1918 Pirchan did not lose contacts with cultural life in the territory of the newly constituted republic. In addition to Pirchan s work for German speaking stages in Czechoslovakia, his professional career includes five sets of stage designs for Czech theatres. The projects of stage designs which have been preserved, allowe tracing the changes of Pirchan s production during the delimited period of twenty years and the richness of genres and topics which discloses the author s invention at the time of looking for the adequate forms.
