Multimedia Creation

The aim of the study program is to create highly qualified active artists who utilise multiple media in their creative activities, to prepare them for independent creative work, especially in the field of free creation on the international scene, but also in the field of utility creations in the creative industry (e.g. incidental creations, computer games design, museum exhibitions, public art, etc.).

The expected employability of graduates depend on their individual focus.

During the studies, the graduates meet with domestic and foreign experts from various relevant fields.

All aspects of the Multimedia Creation study programme, listed below within the individual standards, are closely related to the mission of JAMU, the current Long-term Plan of Educational and Creative Activities of the Faculty of Music JAMU for the period 2016–2021 and the priorities of the to-be-completed strategy of further development for 2021–2025.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

• has comprehensive knowledge of the issues of the field in its variability of multimedia forms of artistic production and in the whole range of their expressive possibilities;
• has advanced skills in the field, including mastery of the basic range of creative processes and compositional techniques of the 20th century, but also the ability to apply the latest knowledge of science and development in the field of new technolog
• has deep knowledge of changes in social processes, art history and the development of artistic styles and trends;
• has good language skills, including knowledge of music, art, theatre and film terminology, is able to explain his or her intentions in a foreign language and place his or her work in the context of the international art scene;
• is well versed in the field of pedagogical work: methodology, didactics of pedagogy and psychology;
• has practical technical and production experience gained from working on faculty or school-wide projects (solo, chamber and orchestral projects, often with international participation) or experience gained through a study stay or traineeship abroad;
• has practical organisational experience gained from working on school projects, concerts, exhibitions, productions in the school studio and theatre / music and drama laboratory, and at international festivals.

The graduate can work in the following characteristic professions:

– author of multimedia works;

– author of websites;

– audiovisual creator;

– composer of contemporary or incidental music, music for computer games and other experimental art forms;

– a multimedia specialist or dramaturge of new media and projects in concert halls and theatres of all types, in art agencies or ensembles, in cultural or non-profit institutions, or for public performances;

– dramaturge of a multimedia art festival;

– initiator of own agency activities;

– teacher at all levels of art education (primary art school, conservatory, university) and in various subjects (composition, composition theory, music theory, music and art history, etc.).

The ECTS system is used to create the study plans. A teaching unit is 45 minutes and regular courses are usually taught in two teaching units, i.e. 90 minutes. The study plan consists of compulsory, elective and optional courses and of compulsory artistic study outputs. The system of studies is conceived so that the students should acquire a total of at least 120 credits the two years of studies and they must achieve a minimum of 30 credits per semester (60 credits for one year of studies). The study programme Multimedia Creation is guaranteed by the Composition, Conducting and Opera Direction Department at the Faculty of Music JAMU. The education is comprehensively designed and combines the following:

– individual in-person teaching;

– training, instruction and project-based education; the students directly acquire skills and professional habits, verify their skills and theoretical knowledge and realise original projects, works or performances;

– practical exercises, work with text, lectures;

– self-study and other forms of education.

Compulsory courses include:

– profiling courses of the theoretical basis for study programmes of musical arts at the master’s degree level at Faculty of Music JAMU;

– courses creating the basic profile of the study programme Multimedia Creation, which are set up to lead towards successful graduation, consisting of the State Final Examination in Multimedia Creation, Contemporary Trends and Theory of Composition, writing and defending a thesis of the required scope and public presentation and defence of a graduation performance (implementation of a larger composition of an interdisciplinary nature, usually in the form of a complex and informative musical installation or interactive environment or a concert, film or theatre performance with a level of difficulty similar to the graduation orchestral composition in the Composition field, at least 30 minutes long or requiring the audience’s attention for at least 30 minutes.

The set of compulsory courses is designed so that the final sum of credits is higher than 60.

Elective courses include an expanding set of courses that develop and complement the content of compulsory courses in order to increase the necessary specialised skills and offer the graduate a more specific profiling. The system is designed so that the resulting credit total of elective courses is greater than 30.

Optional courses complement the knowledge and skills of compulsory and elective courses and provide an opportunity to further develop these through related courses. The courses must be chosen so that the final sum of credits awarded for compulsory, elective and optional courses exceeds the required 120 credits for the entire studies.

The set of optional courses is also supplemented by courses from other programmes of the Faculty of Music JAMU.

The State Final Examination in the follow-up master’s degree study programme Multimedia Creation consists of the following parts:

– public presentation and defence of the graduation performance / work and its written documentation;

– preparation, submission and defence of a diploma thesis in the form of a professional text at least 40 pages long without appendices;

– examinations focused on the courses Multimedia Composition and Contemporary Trends and Theory of Composition.

The master’s degree graduation performance consists of the implementation of an interdisciplinary composition, usually in the form of a comprehensive and informative musical-visual installation, interactive environment, concert, film or theatre performance, etc. The technical and artistic quality of all components shall be significantly elaborated and follow current artistic trends. The student shall consult all parameters of the work with the supervisor of the graduation performance, or with another professional consultant or technologist. Consultations are focused on the components of music, art, movement, stage, technology, etc. The length is set at a minimum of 30 minutes, for which it is necessary to the attention of the audience.

Through the graduation performance, the student shall demonstrate the following competence:

– a high level of knowledge of current trends and proven strategies of the 20th century in the application of various stylistic and expressive procedures of contemporary creation within their own concepts developing a personal creative programme;

– advanced skills in designing and creating autonomous and distinctive works of contemporary art in a variety of forms and formats;

– the ability to independently implement professional projects at the international level, using various technological methods in the field of multimedia creation;

– the ability able to develop his or her own technical solutions and creative procedures for the creation of original works of art, projects or artistic performances;

– the ability to cooperate on utility projects in creative industry, the ability to lead a team in the implementation of performances, concerts, films, installations or public art;

– the ability to develop current trends.

The evaluation of the graduation performance includes the graduate’s profile prepared by the graduation performance supervisor, a written opinion of the graduation performance opponent, defence of the graduation performance at the State Final Examination and possible feedback of participating students and spectators (especially from the professional public).

The following criteria are, in particular, taken into account in the evaluation of the graduation performance:

– the content of the project and its setting in the context of contemporary art;

– creativity and impressiveness of the project’s artistic rendering of the original intent;

– the level of use of musical, visual, movement and other means, their technical processing in the construction of the work’s expression;

– coordination of individual components of the project from the semiotic point of view;

– handling of the project’s organisation and cooperation with potential members of the creative team.

The topics of the final theses reflect the research in the field of art forms belonging to the broad field group “Time Based Art”. In addition to traditional artistic methods, they also include mapping of borderline genres in contemporary art and exploring the possibilities of using their means of expression against the background of information technology, integrated and computer systems and the evolving digital culture. Interconnection of the interpretive and author’s principles of creation, aimed at forming a new and distinctive artistic expression, allows the future graduate to form his or her authentic creative programme.

Graduates of the master’s degree studies can continue in the doctoral study programme Composition and Theory of Composition or in other similarly focused study programmes from the offer of other faculties and schools.
