Course objectives

The aim of this two-semester module is to prepare students for the specific context of artistic research, in which the researcher is themselves part of the field under investigation – examining their own creative practice, their own ensemble, colleagues or fellow students. The module does not teach research methodology; rather, it develops the competencies that such methodology presupposes. Specifically, these include:

  • understanding one’s own position in relation to the field under investigation and its implications for the validity of findings,
  • adopting the practice of keeping a diary and engaging in reflection as both a working tool and a source of data for research,
  • developing the ability to maintain a sense of detachment – a meta-position – when assessing one’s own and others’ work,
  • developing the relational aspect of the research interview and the ability to recognise the limits of one’s own competence,
  • understanding the ethical risks of research conducted within one’s immediate professional environment,
  • learning to give and receive feedback and the basics of intervision,
  • acquiring mental health management tools that enable the sustainment of long-term research work.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the winter semester, students will:

  • articulate their own position in relation to the field under investigation and assess what their involvement in the field facilitates and what it hinders;
  • keep a systematic research diary and distinguish within it between personal notes and material suitable for research;
  • adopt a meta-perspective on their own experience, utilising group readings of their own material to do so;
  • recognise the physical and emotional signals accompanying research work and interpret them both as data and as indicators of their state.

Syllabus

Block 1 – Who is actually conducting the research here?

Why, in artistic research, the researcher is part of the field under investigation. A map of one’s own roles in relation to the subject (creator, colleague, employee, teacher, friend) and what each of these roles reveals and what it obscures. The heuristic and mental-health role of research. Research as a space to pause and reflect on one’s own practice.

Block 2 – The diary as an everyday practice

Types of research notes (process-based, fieldwork, emotional, methodological). Writing as a tool for thinking, not merely as a record. How to keep notes so that they remain usable over time. What a researcher may and may not record about others.

Block 3 – Distance

Meta-position: techniques for reading one’s own material "through the eyes of another". Signals from one’s own body as a source of data and as an indicator.
