Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide an overview of the development of scenography from the 19th century to the year 1945. Students will be able to identify prominent characteristic features of the individual movements and styles. They will be informed about the impact of the development of other components of a theater performances at the development of stage design. They will understand the basic theoretical concepts of scenography and know the main theater theorists.

  • Scenic practice late 19th century
  • Richard Wagner and his theater reform
  • The beginnings of the formation of modernism and its enforcement (symbolism, impressionism, expressionism, futurism)
  • Reformers scenes - A. Appia, E. G. Craig
  • The beginnings of the avant-garde and its transformations (Dadaism, Surrealism, poetism, Cubism, Constructivism, Bauhaus)
