Course objectives
Familiarity with jazz harmonic systems in terms of color and contour of different procedures.
Syllabus
  • Multitonal systems. Reharmonization of Coltrane system using three tonal centers. Whole tone scale. Constant structure. Quart rates and their use in reharmonizations. Reharmonization analysis techniques of Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, Chick Corea, Gill Evans, Joe Pass, Pat Metheny and Richie Beirach. Term Project - reharmonization of jazz standard - own choice. Jazz harmonic systems and their definitions. Noaltered and altered structure and diatonic modes and chords. Non-modal chords and their distribution. Using harmonic connections as a compositional resource. Harmonic contour of jazz forms.
