Course objectives
Achieving practical ability of the students to harmonize melodies and vice versa, for the use of various harmonization tonal, modal environment and modulation.
Syllabus
  • Based on analyzes of individual tracks around the development of a "harmonious environment" jazz compositions, to be able to utilize the entire spectrum for its own composition and harmonizing melodies. Tonal, functional harmony-used to half of 50ies, the advent of modal harmonies, most presented release date M.Davise "Kind of Blue" (the song "So What," "All Blues" - in addition to the other use ostinato etc.) in 60s increasingly distancing functional harmony, harmony so called chromatic, ambiguous tonality (W.Shorter "Nefertiti", H.Hancock "Maiden Voyage"), the 70th, the 80s, the advent of fusion, a much more important role of the bass line ( virtuoso bassists like J.Pastorius) -harmony that increasingly emphasized bass, have taken turns and broken chords, delays. In contemporary composers such as. By John Scofield we find polytonal relations between melody and bass line ( "Stranger to the Light"). Modern jazz harmonic language presents a virtual kaleidoscope of sounds, from basic triads to complex polychords. Analysis of modern jazz songs of their choice.
