Course objectives
The subject supports the creativity and personality of the student and prepares them for independent work in highly competitive environments. Studying the subject prepares the student for the variability and flexibility of the labour market. The student has the opportunity to connect the theory of the historically informed performance practise beyond their skills on a classical or historical instrument. The future graduate of the subject should acquire the knowledge, ability and skills so as to incorporate them into their concert activity. The aim of this course is to prepare the student for authentic interpretation in solo and ensemble playing, as well as in specialized orchestras. For students to correctly interpret the early music, it is necessary that they be familiarized with the relevant issues: tempo, instrumental setting, articulation, phrasing, tuning, ornamentation, etc. All these questions need to be supported by the corresponding literature.
Learning outcomes
The graduates of this subject should have the awareness, knowledge and ability to inform their work as performers.
Fundamentally, the knowledge acquired on this subject is the pre-requisite for a leading soloist on both domestic and international podiums.
Syllabus
  • Detailed study of: Musical documentation: original manuscripts e.g. signatures, sketches, contemporary copies, publications, e.g. composer-approved editions, contemporary editions, posthumous editions, musical journals. Textual documentation: archival documents – factual sources, e.g. records from notaries, marriage contracts, journals, correspondence, reminiscences, polemic writing, aesthetic works. Instrumental documentation: instrument catalogues, the composition of ensembles and orchestras, the findings of experts.
  • Examples of discussed topics: Improvisation and the interpretation of ornaments: Not everything concerning the performance of early music is clear because a lot of the music of the period was improvised and because ornamentation was not recorded. This pertains to the inclusion of mainly figured bass, improvised insertions such as cadenzas in instrumental concertos and smaller ornamentations within a musical movement.
  • Tempo: Tempo has a greater effect on the listener than anything else. The tempo is a decisive factor in influencing the authenticity of the sound. Poorly chosen tempi have very serious consequences.

The teacher evaluates the activity of students, how much they have learnt and their ability to shape this into an oral presentation.
