Course objectives
The Persuasive Role of Music in the Commercial - Music in Film
In this course, we explore how music interacts with images, dialogue, and other elements to generate meaning in films; the text and assigned readings introduce you to the field of film studies and to the analysis of music in film. You learn specialized terminology in order to be able to express your own thoughts about music’s role in this complex art form, from detailed orchestral score to playlist of popular songs. To achieve our ends, we learn and practice various forms of hermeneutic analysis. Each week we analyze and discuss the assigned film.

Teaching methods
Assignments Each week you will watch the assigned film before each class. Everyone should be prepared to discuss the films in class, and at least once in the semester, each student will lead discussion for a day’s readings. In addition, there will also be three very brief essays (details for these essays can be found after the calendar).
