Course objectives
Achieve practical skills of writing melodies and expertise to develop its lead in the compositions in simple song forms with subsequent polyphony or harmonization.
Syllabus
  • Broadening knowledge of work with the theme, the theme for the use of 12-tone technique, the analysis of such tracks. J. Pastorius' Balloon Song "B.Evans" Twelve-Tone Tune, practice writing melodies that way. Analysis of how melodic and harmonic compositions using various forms of work with the motive. The major scale (T.Jones "A Child Is Born"), minor degrees. (H.Silver "Song for My Father"), fashion (eg. Lydian, H.Hancock "Tell Me a Bedtime Story), pentatonic (J. Coltrane "Pursuance"), melodic variations by changing the mode (ACJobim "No More Blues"), motivic repetitions (Th.Monk "Straight No Chaser"), sequence motifs (Th.Monk "Well You Needn't), motivic transformation -stejný rhythm, different tones and vice versa (H.Hancock "Maiden Voyage", Ch.Corea "Spain"), themes based on the pattern interval (J.Coltrane "Giant Steps"), tunes based on "guide tones" (H. Hancock "Dolphin Dance"). Writing melodies in different ways, which are discussed in detail in the analysis, their harmonizing and arranging for more monophonic instruments. The analysis tracks favorite musician / composer and all his / her compositional methods.
