- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to provide students with basic information on sociological research methods and techniques. Emphasis is placed on the adoption of the rules for drawing up the research project and the basic definition and typology of the research methods. Students will be made familiar with examples of the most important sociological surveys and will be guided in preparing their own research projects. The aim is to guide the students in the research planning process from the choice of the research topic, through the design of research questions, the selection of the research sample to the interpretation of the data.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course the student will:
- have mastered the basic knowledge needed to carry out their own research;
- have been able to correctly interpret and use sociological data;
- have been able to work with publicly available sources of sociological data. - Syllabus
- 1. Introduction to sociological research: What to explore? How to do it? And what is it all about?
- 2. How did it all begin? The development of empirical sociology and famous sociological surveys
- 3. The basic definition of research methods and techniques
- 4. Quantitative methods and research process
- 5. Where sociological data is taken - a practical example of the activities of a sociological agency
- 6. A step by step design of one's own research - The definition of the topic, selecting the method
- 7. The structure of the questionnaire
- 8. The data processing principles in quantitative research
- 9. Presentations of research plans
- 10. The pilot testing of assembled questionnaires
- 11. A collection, analysis and interpretation of the data
- 12. Writing a research report, presenting the results of one's own investigation and their opposition

- The course will take the form of a combination of lectures and seminars (1 + 1 lessons). The students' work will be focused on their own research projects, including the drafting of the final report and the presentation of the results.
