- Course objectives
The aim of this two-semester module is to prepare students for the specific context of artistic research, in which the researcher is themselves part of the field under investigation – examining their own creative practice, their own ensemble, colleagues or fellow students. The module does not teach research methodology; rather, it develops the competencies that such methodology presupposes. Specifically, these include:
- understanding one’s own position in relation to the field under investigation and its implications for the validity of findings,
- adopting the practice of keeping a diary and engaging in reflection as both a working tool and a source of data for research,
- developing the ability to maintain a sense of detachment – a meta-position – when assessing one’s own and others’ work,
- developing the relational aspect of the research interview and the ability to recognise the limits of one’s own competence,
- understanding the ethical risks of research conducted within one’s immediate professional environment,
- learning to give and receive feedback and the basics of intervision,
- acquiring mental health management tools that enable the sustainment of long-term research work.
- understanding one’s own position in relation to the field under investigation and its implications for the validity of findings,
- Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the summer term, students will:
- conduct a research interview whilst taking into account the relationship with the interviewee and recognise the limits of their own competence;
- identify the ethical risks of research carried out in their immediate professional environment and propose ways of addressing them;
- provide constructive feedback to a colleague and use intervision as a tool for working on their own research;
- recognise the signs of their own burnout and apply mental health management techniques.
- conduct a research interview whilst taking into account the relationship with the interviewee and recognise the limits of their own competence;
- Syllabus
Block 1 – The Interview as a Relationship
The relational aspect of the research interview: listening, empathy, silence, asking questions at the right moment. Boundary situations – what to do when the interview breaks down. The limits of one’s own competence: the researcher is not a therapist; recognising when a situation needs to be referred to a specialist.
Block 2 – The Ethics of Closeness
Research involving colleagues, one’s own research group and one’s own students. Informed consent amongst people the researcher encounters on a daily basis. Anonymisation in a field where everyone knows one another. What happens to the relationship after the results are published. Model situations drawn from participants’ dissertation topics.
Block 3 – Keeping it going for four years
Mental wellbeing and managing boundaries in long-term research. Procrastination as a signal, not a character flaw. Intervision as a working tool — practising an intervision group directly during the block. Feedback that drives progress.- Literature
