Course objectives

- gain an overview of non-traditional, experimental, and alternative theater and its leading figures

- become familiar with the ideas and key figures in theater anthropology, proto-theater, and para-theater

The ability to identify, understand, and apply key discoveries in 20th-century theater theory to one’s own creative work. Familiarity with contemporary trends in performance art and its conceptual framework (ritual, myth, role, post-drama, etc.). Linking the historiographical context to practice: applying theoretical models in individual and collective creative work.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: - identify individual lines of development, trends, and, where applicable, innovations in auteur and experimental theater, both Czech and international - analyze any authorial approach in a theatrical work - apply a broader socio-critical perspective of auteur theater to contemporary theater trends - reflect on their own theatrical work, whether as an author or a lector / director - Student—recognizes and describes key movements in auteur and experimental theater; understands their theoretical and historiographical contexts; is able to apply them in their own creative practice; and is familiar with basic terminology (ritual, Fluxus, Third Theater, post-drama).

Syllabus

1. The concepts of non-traditional, auteur, and alternative theater. Typical forms: text-appeal, poetry theater, cabaret. Showcases and festivals of amateur non-traditional theater.

2. The small-scale theater movement—from the late 1950s to 1968: I. Vyskočil’s Nedivadlo, Divadlo X, Divadlo Orfeus, Kladivadlo, and Docela malé divadlo.

3. Alternative theater companies: Quidam, Bílé divadlo, and Křesadlo.

4. Studio theaters: Studio Ypsilon, Divadlo na provázku, Divadlo na okraji, HaDivadlo, and their projects (Cesty, Divadlo v pohybu, Rozrazil).

5. Amateur theater groups: Pražská pětka, Nepojízdná housenka, Jelo, Vizita, Divadlo AHA, Studio A, Ochotnický kroužek.

Obsah předmětu - anotace) Navazuje na přehledovou znalost teorie a historiografie divadla. Přednáškový cyklus k avantgardním, autorským a experimentálním směrům 2. poloviny 20. století až po současnost. Práce s texty a audiovizuálními materiály; od artaudovských výbojů, druhé divadelní reformy až po mimoestetické funkce divadla a postdramatické myšlení. Historiografický přehled a orientace v reformátorských snahách; koncepty: rituál, kořeny, mýtus, příběh, maska, role, antropologie divadla, nepravidelná dramaturgie, fluxus, třetí divadlo
