Course objectives

The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the materials and production processes used in theatre. Students will learn how theatre workshops operate, how work is planned and carried out in individual departments, and what is specific to each of them. During the course, students will visit production workshops at professional theatres.


Descriptors: Students will apply the knowledge and skills acquired during the course in their future professional practice, particularly in roles such as Head of Stage, workshop supervisor, set designer, or costume designer.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
  • take a comprehensive approach to stage production within the broader context of theatre operations
  • distinguish between operating in-house workshops and outsourcing production
  • map the set production process and assess its cost and time requirements
  • identify the most commonly used materials and specify their appropriate use in the production process
  • comply with fire safety and occupational health and safety regulations during production
  • plan production processes to ensure compliance with the fire safety and occupational health and safety regulations applicable to theatre operations
