Course objectives
Graduates possess knowledge of copyright issues, as well as related aspects of intellectual property protection, enabling them to navigate the current legal framework governing copyright and to apply the relevant legislation to specific situations in the arts.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to: understand and apply the basic concepts and principles of copyright law in the fields of drama and music, from the perspective of both the author and the user; identify appropriate ways of using the works in question; identify and comprehensively develop proposals for appropriate licensing arrangements to secure these user rights; when negotiating with agencies and collective management organisations, be able to precisely formulate requirements and assess the suitability of the solutions they propose; independently identify the appropriate form of the necessary contractual relationships between users and copyright holders, and draft the relevant licence agreements.

  • principles, sources and terminology of copyright law;
  • legal forms of the creation of the work of art, artistic performance and sound recording;
  • the scope of copyright (personal and proprietary rights);
  • licensing of the rights of use of objects under the copyright protection;
  • Free use issues, including forms of Creative Commons;
  • copyright limitations and consequences of copyright infringement;
  • special regimes of copyright works;
  • other intellectual property rights and the protection of the intangibles in the context of theatre practice.

Teaching methods
As part of their self-study, students work with, amongst other things, an interactive syllabus in which individual topics are summarised and through which they have access to further study materials. During lectures, key topics are presented or explored in greater depth, using specific examples from cultural practice. As part of the seminar-based teaching, students work on set tasks (typically independent or team-based analysis of specific situations from a copyright perspective, analysis of contract texts, legislation or other legal documents, exercises to master legal concepts, etc.). Each assignment is followed by an assessment, generally involving a presentation and defence of the student’s own solution and position, followed by group discussion and debate, with the lecturer providing ongoing guidance and feedback on the arguments presented. Throughout the semester, students complete ongoing assignments set as part of the seminars, which assess their ability to work independently with legal texts and apply them to specific situations.
Assessment methods
To be admitted to the examination, students must have attended at least 70 per cent of the seminars. Students are expected to participate actively in the seminars and to complete any additional tasks set during the seminars. The examination is written and is designed to assess students’ understanding of legal sources and copyright law, as well as their ability to identify the relevant legal provisions, interpret them and apply them to specific situations.
