Course objectives
The aim is to provide a comprehensive overview of qualitative and quantitative research and methods. The aim is also to present a different approaches to research strategy and research realization and to provide basic skills related to the processing of written research reports and those related to work with different publishing and information resources as well as citation ethics.
Seminar part of the course should provide students with a space for discussion in aim to select a bachelor thesis topic, developing the research project and the research plan of the thesis.
The output subject is a complete research project of the thesis, including the literature and sources, appropriate supervisor, opponent and consultant of the bachelor thesis.
Learning outcomes
After completing this course student:
- is fully informed about the importance of the academic thesis and paper, its processing procedure, the importance of communication with the supervisor and is familiar with all the deadlines connected with the successful graduation during the third year of study,
- is fully informed about the nature of the graduation projects and in particular the method of its transfer to the written documentation,
- is fully informed about the state final examination,
- distinguish between different approaches to research and tools relevant to mixed research with emphasis on case studies as the main research tool for the study program,
- is acquainted with the Decree of the Dean of the Theatre Faculty of Janacek Academy of Music and Performing Arts for the supervisor and formal requirements of the qualification thesis and graduation projects,
- can elaborate own research plan and choose adequate methods for the realization of research at the bachelor level,
- understands the importance of citation ethics, plagiarism and can quote,
- can distinguish the information power of various documents and information sources relevant to own research, for this purpose students knows hot to use a tool citacepro.com,
- is informed about the conditions of the admission procedure for Master's degree study programs at the Theatre Faculty of Janacek Academy of Music and Performing Arts that are relevant for the graduate of the Bachelor's study program Theatre Production,
- has skills in professional and academic written communication and understands the importance of processing a professional portfolio in an on-line environment for the gradual fulfillment of future career strategy.
- has the research plan of the bachelor's thesis, the designated thesis supervisor and the opponent and has already started the cooperation with the supervisor.

  • Organization and procedure of state final bachelor examinations.
  • Requirements for bachelor's thesis and graduation project documentation and procedure of its defense. Duties of the student, supervisor, oponent and consultant. Deadlines related to the course of bachelor's thesis preparation and documentation of graduation project.
  • A pathway from the broader theme through the focusation to the particular theme of the bachelor thesis.
  • Qualitative, quantitative and mixed research. Basic approaches to qualitative research. Case studies.
  • Methods of data acquisition, methods of data evaluation and interpretation. Tool citacepro.com.
  • Research report, quality evaluation of a research. Types of written research papers. Methodology of writing a research plan.
  • How to write a final report (seminar, diploma thesis).
  • Standards and quotes, arrangements of the thesis. Citation ethics, plagiarism.

Teaching methods
Lecture 1 h, seminar 1 h

Teaching methods:
work with text, discussion methods, methods of skills development, individual work of students.
The student shares partial seminar results (i.e. in-process stages of a research plan according to deadlines) through shared Google Docs.
At the introductory class, student is familiar with the semester schedule, the deadlines of the assignments, the way of assessment. The materials for the individual seminars are stored in the Study materials section for students.
Assessment methods
Analysis of the results of the student on the basis of delivered research plan of this thesis, thesis assignment delivered to IS and confirmation of the thesis supervisor.
Continuous monitoring of student performance in terms of involvement in the discussions during the seminar and continuous performance of tasks according to current course schedule, ie. at least 3 written seminar outputs.
For the final conclusion of the subject the student presents and presents his research plan, which is approved by the supervisor.
Required attendance at least 80%.
