Klavírní repertoár 18. a 19. století nevznikal pro dnešní nástroj, ale pro různorodé klavíry své doby. Zvukové a mechanické vlastnosti dobových nástrojů se dnes snažíme poznávat, abychom pochopili představy, záměry a možnosti tehdejších tvůrců. Získané poznatky lze v ideálním případě zúročit v estetických i technických aspektech interpretační koncepce na moderním nástroji. Možné odpovědi záleží nejen na samotné existenci příslušných dobových nástrojů, ale i na jejich stavu. Interpret toužící po vzkříšení autentických múz je často zcela závislý na kvalitě práce restaurátora. Ten může svým zásahem původní vlastnosti nástroje buď obnovit, nebo významně a často i nezvratně změnit. V čem spočívá výpovědní hodnota historického nástroje a jaké závěry lze z konkrétních klavírů vyvodit? Které detaily restaurování mohou být rozhodující? Jak si stojíme v mezinárodním srovnání? Co všechno spáchali světoví odborníci a proč světově nejstarší dochovaný klavír nemusí být nejstarším?

The piano repertoire of the 18th and 19th centuries was not created for today's instrument, but for the diverse pianos of its time. Today, we try to learn about the sound and mechanical properties of period instruments in order to understand the ideas, intentions and possibilities of the creators of that time. The knowledge gained can ideally be used in the aesthetic and technical aspects of the interpretation concept on a modern instrument.The possible answers depend not only on the existence of the relevant period instruments, but also on their condition. A performer desiring to resurrect authentic muses is often completely dependent on the quality of the restorer's work. With his intervention, the restorer can either restore the original characteristics of the instrument or significantly and often irreversibly change it. What is the informative value of a historical instrument and what conclusions can be drawn from specific pianos? Which restoration details can be decisive? How do we stand in an international comparison? What have world experts accomplished and why may the earliest extant piano not be the earliest?
