My contribution to the Karel Vachek Conference – testimony and reflection touched on Karel Vachek's work as a teacher. The core of his pedagogical thinking and his contribution to art education lies in the fact that during his tenure at the FAMU documentary department, he enabled students to work in an atmosphere of tolerance and freedom. Vachek accepted diverse thinking and creative styles. He defended the thinking and work of his students so that they would not be stigmatized or subjugated. He warned against compromises that lead to homogenizing and mediocre routine in creation. Vachek enabled his pupils to gain an insight into the critical thinking of audiovisual creation and artistic research. He tried to ensure that the creators did not lose touch with the problems of contemporary society. As a teacher, Karel Vachek supported new trends and experiments in filmmaking and demanded from his students the ability of solid argumentation and constant humanistic cultivation.
