Kniha je věnována experimentální „nové opeře“ s názvem Chameleon aneb Josef Fouché (premiéra 16. dubna 1984, Dům umění Brno). Vytvořil ji autorský kolektiv složený z hudebního skladatele Miloše Štědroně, dramatika Ludvíka Kundery, dramaturga inscenace Petra Oslzlého a jejího režiséra Petra Scherhaufera. První část publikace tvoří analýza inscenace vycházející ze shromážděného archivního materiálu včetně fotografií, audiovizuálních záznamů, dobových recenzí a osobních rozhovorů s tvůrci. Ukotvuje inscenaci v souvislostech tvorby Divadla na provázku, spolupráce s jednotlivými členy tvůrčího týmu, v kulturní a politické situaci doby. Sleduje průběh vzniku inscenace od první ideje po režijní nastudování. Druhou částí je rekonstrukce představení z roku 1986, vytvořená na základě pracovního audiovizuálního záznamu Aleše Záboje. Knihu doprovází množství obrazového materiálu v podobě černobílých i barevných fotografií, reprodukcí originálních scénických návrhů i makety scény, přetištěných recenzních ohlasů, včetně dochované partitury a dalších materiálů dostupných pod QR kódem.

The book is devoted to an experimental "new opera" entitled Chameleon or Josef Fouché (premiere 16 April 1984, Brno House of Arts). It was created by a team of authors consisting of composer Miloš Štědron, playwright Ludvík Kundera, dramaturge Petr Oslzlý and its director Petr Scherhaufer. The first part of the publication consists of an analysis of the production based on the collected archival material including photographs, audiovisual recordings, contemporary reviews and personal interviews with the creators. It places the production in the context of the work of the Theatre on a String, the collaboration with individual members of the creative team, and the cultural and political situation of the time. It traces the development of the production from the first idea to the staging. The second part is a reconstruction of the performance from 1986, based on the working audiovisual recording by Aleš Záboj.The book is accompanied by a wealth of visual material in the form of black and white and colour photographs, reproductions of the original stage designs and a mock-up of the set, reprinted reviews, including the surviving score, and other materials available under a QR code.
