Course objectives
Acquaintance with the development of artificial music primarily on the European continent in the 20th century, understanding the development of musical trends in the context of their style and with regard to the development of compositional techniques.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- define the essence of the development of European artificial music of the 20th century,
- to define these developmental trends in music through key compositional techniques and aesthetic approaches,
-determine these specifics based on listening to a musical example,
- to integrate specific musical events (at the level of individual composers and their work) into the broader developmental context of European music of the 20th century.
Syllabus
  • AS:
  • 1) The breakdown of tonal harmony and the situation in the development of music at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
  • 2) Second Viennese School I: basic characteristics and development of relaxed tonality.
  • 3) The Second Viennese School II: the development of atonality.
  • 4) The Second Vienna School III: the development of dodecaphony.
  • 5) Second Viennese school IV: synthesis of partial styles and overall context in 20th century music.
  • 6) Musical neoclassicism.
  • 7) Musical neofolklorism.
  • 8) Igor Stravinsky as a representative of the second basic line of development of the music of the first half of the 20th century.
  • 9) Other trends in the development of music of the first half of the 20th century I (Les Six, Hindemith, etc.).
  • 10) Other trends in the development of music of the first half of the 20th century II.
  • 11) Russian interwar avantgarde and the issue of the birth of socialist realism.

  • 1) The situation after the Second World War and the emergence of New Music.
  • 2) Multiserial composition.
  • 3) Electroacoustic / electronic and concrete music.
  • 4) Timbre music.
  • 5) Other compositional approaches (Messiaen, Nono etc.).
  • 6) Pathern music I (Young, Reich, Riley).
  • 7) Pathern music II (Glass et al.).
  • 8) Postmodern turn in the seventies – stylistic and compositional starting points and basic characterization.
  • 9) Musical creation in the postmodern period I.
  • 10) Musical creation in the postmodern period II.
  • 11) Microinterval music – work by A. Hába.
