Course objectives
The student is required to demonstrate that during his work in the ensemble he has acquired the ability to listen to his / her teammates, can co-operate with the conductor and can use different colors of his instrument in different moods in terms of style, pace and dynamics of composition.
Syllabus
  • Expansion of experience with interpretation of big band songs. Making more complex pieces and arrangements from the works of modern big band makers. Emphasis on the precise interplay of individual sections and work with the dynamics of the body. Utilization of the offered sound colors - wooden wind instruments and hammers of brass instruments. Comparing the difference in expression and feeling of older big band bodies with modern jazz orchestras. Works by composers like Thad Jones, Gil Evans, Maria Schneider, Vince Mendoza, Mel Lewis, Joe Henderson and Bob Brookmayer.
