Course objectives
Objectives: To deepen knowledge of copyright (the authors' rights and the rights of performers) as well as of follow-up relations from the field of intellectual property rights protection to enable students to understand the current legislation of copyright area and to apply the legislation to specific situations in the arts according to students` comprehensive preparation and justification of the legal instruments used to solve the problem of copyright.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge:
Student will deepen the knowledge of copyright issues in the field of dramatic and musical art both from the position of author, performer, producer of sound and audio-video records, but also from the position of users. Student focuses on media law.

Skills:
Students can search for adequate ways how to use considered works of art or artistic performances, audio and audiovisual recordings. Student can find the appropriate license to ensure these user rights. In discussions with agencies and collective administrators is able to accurately formulate requirements and assess their optimality of the proposed solutions. Student knows issues of periodical and non-periodical publications as well as the legislation of television and radio broadcasting.

Competences:
Student is instructed licence holder and can arrange the required obligations for the use other holder of rights. Student understands the technology of copyright solutions of artistic creation as well as of use of objects of copyright protection from the part of an user (especially an art institution). Student can individually find an adequate form of the necessary contractual relationships between users and holders of licences and prepare appropriate license agreements. Students is so eligible to communicate with management of an art institutions and art agencies (collective administrators) to ensure copyright for the realization of artistic creation.

  • Course content:
    principles, sources and terminology of copyright law;
  • legal forms of the creation of the work of art, artistic performance and sound recording;
  • the scope of copyright (personal and proprietary rights);
  • licensing of the rights of use of objects under the copyright protection;
  • Free use issues, including forms of Creative Commons;
  • copyright limitations and consequences of copyright infringement;
  • special regimes of copyright works;
  • other intellectual property rights and the protection of the intangibles in the context of theatre practice.

Teaching methods
Student acquires declared skills through an individual or team solution of the given problem, including the possibility to solve a fictitious project.
Student must be able to respond, prepare the solution and defend it from others, as well as respond to the solutions of others.
Student works independently with a legal texts, basic knowledge of this text is prerequisite.
Teacher introduces the problem, directs the search for the right solutions, and evaluates the proposed procedures.
Assessment methods
Student receives during an active involvement formative assessment, and is finally classified according a final written test.
