The studies in this field aim to create experts in the field of Lighting Design and projection in response to the demand for such experts. These are to become self-sufficient artists with deep knowledge of lighting technologies and techniques with a significant overlap into scenography, with a wide range of knowledge (theatre history, dramaturgy) and the ability to creatively apply that knowledge especially in the field of theatre production. Graduates will find employment in theatres and cultural institutions of all types in the Czech Republic and abroad, in theatre and

paratheatrical projects, cultural projects and in agencies dealing with the implementation of cultural programmes, at domestic and international theatre and music festivals, in television, film industry,

architecture, exhibitions, etc. Graduates can also establish and run their own lighting design studios. The acquired knowledge and skills will enable graduates of the field of Lighting Design to find employment in related

creative disciplines such as architectural lighting, exhibition lighting designs, film and television lighting, lighting design in the entertainment industry (popular music concerts, events and shows) and independent artistic activity.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • demonstrates broad (practical and theoretical) knowledge in the field of lighting design and projection technologies;
  • showcases respectable knowledge of the development and current trends of lighting technologies and their control devices;
  • has a deep knowledge of the history and theory of world and Czech theatre and scenography;
  • demonstrates an understanding of other theatrical and artistic disciplines (direction, dramaturgy, scenography)
  • has basic knowledge of film, television and architectural lighting, which he or she can expand and apply in these fields;
  • is able to create, technically document and present the lighting concept of a theatrical production, film, event, show, etc.;
  • is able to independently design and prepare a lighting exhibition, show, etc. – from the dramaturgical concept to implementation;
  • can implement the design of a lighting concept in practice;
  • masters the technology of the theatre space;
  • is able to work with video technology and projections when creating a lighting concept;
  • is familiar with the latest trends in the development of lighting systems and can work with modern audio and video technologies;
  • independently design lighting design for productions of all genres (opera, dance theatre and ballet, drama, musical, etc.);
  • create a lighting concept based on the direction and scenographic concept in a creative team composed of a director and scene (and costumes) designer – lighting designer
  • develop a lighting concept in visualisation software for a specific type of theatre space with a specific scenography and specific lighting sources and put that concept into practice with the local lighting team.

A graduate of the Lighting Design field of study is an independent artist who have mastered a wide range of knowledge of lighting and projection technologies and techniques, which he or she can apply in a creative way.

Students must enrol in and complete courses marked as the field basics. They supplement their study plan with personal specialisation courses from the offer of their studio and the Faculty of Theatre.

Internship at a lighting designer or internship at a theatre (3 weeks)

Successful completion of all courses marked as the field’s basic courses.

Acquisition of at least 120 credits.

A follow-up to bachelor’s degree studies in stage technology, scenography, direction, or bachelor’s degree studies in art schools.
