The field aims is to develop students’ talent and to prepare for auxiliary and independent direction activities, especially in the field of opera and related genres of musical theatre, or in the field of operetta, melodrama, musical or cabaret, variety theatre, etc. The education also focuses on preparing the students for a professional employment in the field of pedagogy.

Applicant profile:

an applicant for the bachelor’s degree field of study Opera Direction may be a graduate of a conservatory, grammar school or other secondary school, or a higher education institution with a musical or non-musical specialisation, who will prove his or her talent for the study of Opera Directing (personal artistic direction, ability to read musical drama, creativity, analytical and logical thinking, the ability to effectively communicate with an actor, the ability to reflect on what is happening on stage, a practical and methodical approach to problem-solving) and also a serious interest in this field. In addition, applicants are required to have basic knowledge of music theory and music history, a general knowledge of culture, proficiency in at least one foreign language at the secondary school level, as well as adequate personal maturity necessary to handle the demanding studies and application in this field.

A graduate will:

– have comprehensive knowledge of the field of Opera Direction and at least basic insight into the issues of related professions (dramaturgy, acting, singing, orchestra and choir management, production, scenography, choreography, light design, acoustics, video art, stage technology);

– acquire skills in the given field, including knowledge of stage means of expression and mastery of basic methods and procedures in working with an actor, mise-en-scène, space, light, movement, costume, tempo and rhythm, dynamics and music, working with his or her own creative imagination and fantasy;

– have deep knowledge of musical-dramatic production in the context of the history of music, literature, drama and the visual arts;

– be fairly proficient in a foreign language, with good knowledge of professional terminology;

– be sufficiently educated in the field of pedagogical work: methodology, didactics of pedagogy and psychology;

– have practical experience gained by working on productions of the Devítka studio and the Faculty of Music JAMU Chamber Opera, and possibly also on other extraordinary projects, or experience gained through a study stay abroad, or through meetings with various domestic and foreign experts from various fields related to the field in question.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • demonstrate basic broad knowledge in the field of Opera Direction and its history, including knowledge of practices and traditions in the field, various stage means of expression and various narrative principles, etc;
  • use the acquired skills in the exercise of original medium-scale direction within the publicly presented production of the Chamber Opera of the Faculty of Music JAMU, as well as to develop a directorial conception of a work from the field’s basic reperto
  • apply general skills of team work and effective communication with team members, make independent and responsible decisions even in insufficiently established contexts and on the basis of only a framework assignment, etc.

The graduate can work in the following characteristic professions:

– direction activities;

– assistant of an opera house director;

– opera dramaturgy;

– teacher of art-related professional courses at primary art schools, specialised secondary schools and conservatories.

The graduate can work in the following relevant professions:

– musical dramaturgy in various cultural institutions.

The study plan consists of compulsory, elective and optional courses and of compulsory artistic study outputs.

A student must obtain 60 credits for each year of studies and finish the studies with a state final examination in selected courses, graduation performance defence and bachelor’s thesis defence.
