Dramatic Arts – Field of study catalogue JAMU
Dramatic Arts |
The purpose of the doctoral study programme “Dramatic Arts” is to enable further, highly specialised artistic and scientific education for graduates of the Faculty of Theatre JAMU and related study programmes. It builds on the previous studies: the completion of a field from the master’s study programme “Dramatic Arts” or related study programme is a condition for admission to the studies in the doctoral programme.
The basic characteristics of this doctoral study programme are its orientation towards artistic creation, as well as towards scientific analysis and reflection thereof. This concept of doctoral studies is based on the fact that in the master’s degree programme students are educated as creative artists – their graduation, in addition to the relevant state exams and a written diploma thesis, also includes an artistic performance (project), i.e. artistic artefact, which can consist in direction or dramaturgy of a production, creation of an original dramatic text or a translation of such into Czech, acting performance, stage and costumes preparation for a theatrical production, artistic-pedagogical project, etc.
When the doctoral studies follow up on such master’s degree studies, it is necessary that the doctoral studies continue to develop the artistic creation and related research. The doctoral student continues – usually with a certain amount of experience from his or her own practical artistic work (in theatre, radio, television, etc.) – in the search for new artistic practices in his or her field, in the research into these practices and in the analysis and reflection of their results, which then in turn retroactively influence his or her further artistic activities.
The doctoral study programme also aims to create and educate new teachers of art disciplines for art universities, especially in the field of theatre. Therefore, the supervisors also lead the doctoral students towards independent pedagogical activity. This is usually carried out in the 2nd and 3rd year of studies, either in the form of pedagogical assistance or in connection with the topic of the doctoral thesis.
The philosophy of doctoral studies at the Faculty of Theatre JAMU is based on the understanding of art as an integral part of human thought. In addition to rational discovering of the world, which is anchored in its sovereign and structured form in an infinite number of scientific disciplines, art has also been a way for man to discover the mysteries of being from the very beginning of his existence. The goal of scientific and artistic discovery is the same – it is the effort to understand the essence of human existence and only the means and methods differ. Therefore, doctoral studies at the Faculty of Theatre are focused primarily on learning about the world, learning which is mediated by art and the means and methods of its own. However, it should also be noted that an art-oriented doctoral study programme does not operate in “irrational mists” – it uses exact and rational procedures to the necessary extent; it is in the connection of both, with a special emphasis on artistic creativity (talent, intuition, inspiration), that we see the specifics of an artistic doctoral study programme.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- demonstrate deep and systematic knowledge and understanding of history, theory, practice, concepts and methods in the field of theatre and dramatic arts corresponding to the current state of knowledge at the international level;
- showcase deep understanding of relevant research methods, techniques and strategies and their appropriate application in the field of artistic research;
- demonstrate extensive understanding of the broader professional context in which their research takes place, exercising the ability to relate the results of their research to peer-reviewed, published, presented and other public outputs;
- develop and evaluate theories, concepts and methods of the field, as well as to define fields and classify them in the broader field of theatre and dramatic arts;
- work with relevant bibliographic data, use archives and other sources of information;
- approach research in a creative, innovative and original way, demonstrate flexibility and openness, and at the same time recognise relevant boundaries and draw appropriate conclusions on the basis of substantiated sources and methodologically correct pro
- evaluate new knowledge and ideas, design and use advanced artistic and research methods and innovatively contribute to the development of current theory and practice of theatre and dramatic arts in a way that allows for the expansion of knowledge and dev
- manage one’s own major research project based on clearly focused and justified research objective and methodologies and plan large-scale activities of creative nature and obtain resources for their implementation;
- develop and maintain a system of cooperation and working relationships with collaborators, colleagues and partners in cultural and artistic institutions and in the broader communities of research and artistic practice;
- independently solve complex ethical problems related to creative activity or the use of its results;
- clearly and convincingly communicate their own knowledge in the field of theatre and dramatic arts to other members of the professional community at the international level, as well as to the general public;
- operate within the framework of their professional knowledge, skills and competences in at least one foreign language and present the results of their creative activities in that language both in spoken word and text;
- acquire new professional knowledge, skills and competences through their own creative activities as well as to discover new creative possibilities in the field of theatre and dramatic arts and influence the conditions of education of others.
Graduates of the doctoral study programme “Dramatic Arts” are capable not only of independent artistic creation, but also of informed reflections on that creation in the light of the latest knowledge of contemporary theory of theatre. They combine the natural qualification for artistic creation (talent, artistic intuition) with the ability of scientific analysis in the preparation of projects, in the process of their creation and in their evaluation. As follows from the nature of theatrical art, they must be able to work in teams, but they are able to bring their own essential and inspiring stimuli that affect the final form of an artistic artefact (e.g. theatrical production) that is the fruit of the teamwork. Thanks to their ability to reflect on the process of theatrical production and analyse its individual phases, they should be able to become leading members of artistic groups that create theatrical (media, etc.) projects. Based on the individual field specialisations, they can also apply their knowledge and talent outside the field of theatre, e.g. in pedagogical or managerial work. (see employability below). Knowledge of the methodology of scientific work also qualifies them for professional publishing activities, e.g. in professional theatre journals or in separate book monographs. In this way, they participate in the further development of theatrical art.
A credit study system has been created at the Faculty of Theatre JAMU for studies in the doctoral study programme. Within the credit system, students are awarded credits for the activities they complete, which include prescribed and optional lectures and seminars and the results of their scientific, research, artistic and other creative activities, especially publishing activities, participation in conferences, public presentations of works of art and pedagogical activities carried out as part of their doctoral studies. In each year of studies, the sum of the credits to be awarded for the studied courses represents 60 credits, i.e. 240 for the whole studies. The credit system is designed so that the amount of credits awarded for individual courses takes into account the effort connected therewith.
The studies consist of educational and research part, as well as of artistic, pedagogical and publishing activities. The educational part further contains theoretical preparation for scientific research and other creative activities. There is also the personal specialisation part, which includes courses determined by the tutor. The knowledge, experience and skills acquired are verified through exams, colloquia or evaluation of seminar activities.
In the research part, students prepare papers on solving a specific research task and defend them at a doctoral seminar. The overall research results are then processed into a doctoral thesis, or also into eligible outputs valid for the register of information on results (RIV) or the register of artistic outputs (RUV).
Doctoral studies in a certain field of study are coordinated by the field council, which compiles the framework study plan, determines the content of the admission interview for applicants, proposes tutors and supervisors, approves doctoral thesis topics, evaluates the course of study, proposes and approves the composition of doctoral thesis defences and state doctoral examinations, including review opponents.
Each student’s studies are supervised and coordinated by a professional supervisor, who mainly co-compiles the student’s individual study plan with the student, continuously verifies its fulfilment, and consults with the student on research and the preparation of his or her doctoral thesis.
Verification of knowledge in the defence of the doctoral thesis
The purpose of defending the doctoral thesis is to verify whether the student have mastered the theoretical knowledge and acquired the practical experience and skills of scientific, research, artistic and other creative activities with the ability to put the results of his or her work into recognisable outputs. Furthermore, it verifies whether the student successfully solved a specific research task and processed the results into a doctoral thesis and whether the results contain original scientific or creative knowledge and whether he or she put the results contained therein into in the form of a recognisable output – RIV or RUV. The defence should take place in front of a defence committee consisting of at least five members. The defence is evaluated as: defended – not defended.
Verification of knowledge during the state doctoral examination
The purpose of the state doctoral examination is to verify whether the student has acquired deep theoretical knowledge, practical experience and skills in the relevant field of the doctoral study programme. The state doctoral examination is to be taken before an examination commission consisting of at least three members. The result of the state examination is evaluated as: passed – failed.
