Studies in this field aim to prepare highly qualified music artists – composers for independent creative activity, especially in the field of autonomous classical music (acoustic and electroacoustic), but also accompanying music (i.e. incidental music for film, theatre, computer games, etc.) and partly in the field of non-artificial music (rock and popular music); in addition, thanks to their cultural knowledge, graduates are able to work in various positions in cultural and artistic institutions, possibly as music dramaturges in the creative industry. In addition, a graduate will be able to work in creative industries, for example to initiate, plan, implement and manage independent art projects. Preparation for a professionally oriented employment in pedagogy for the level of primary art schools, conservatories, music grammar schools and universities (music academies).

Applicant profile:

The basic precondition for admission to the next level of studies is – to an even greater extent than for the bachelor’s degree – talent, the ability of creative imagination and creative application of acquired knowledge and skills. An applicant is a graduate of the Composition bachelor’s degree programme at Faculty of Music JAMU or a of related bachelor’s degree programme at JAMU or another university, whose bachelor’s thesis, bachelor’s project and portfolio of compositions demonstrate an excellent level of skill and whose submitted intention to continue his or her studies (diploma thesis topic and graduate project intention) show high level of compositional thinking in a national and international context, with the assumption of the ability of theoretical reflection on compositional procedures. The applicant shall demonstrate the knowledge acquired in the bachelor’s degree studies, present the intention of his or her further studies, the annotation of the master’s thesis and the intention of the graduate project, as well as the ability of structured verbal expression and presentation and communication skills. An applicant shall have an obvious motivation to study in the given field and an idea of future professional employment. Someone who is proficient in at least one global language at the university level with emphasis on musical terminology. His or her proficiency in information technology shall significantly exceed the scope of common user competencies (ability to work with music software, freeware and presentation applications, ability to manage websites and use the Internet for team collaboration).

A graduate will:

– have comprehensive and detailed knowledge of the field of Composition in its entirety;

– have deep knowledge of the field’s history;

– be familiar with the aesthetics of art, as well as with the development of artistic trends;

– have practical experience gained from working on faculty or school-wide projects (solo projects, chamber and orchestral projects, often with international participation) or experience gained through a study stay abroad;

– have basic creative skills;

– have knowledge of the artistic environment and respect for the process of artistic creation;

– show a high level of computer literacy;

– have an entrepreneurial approach;

– have excellent proficiency in one foreign language, including professional terminology, as well as sufficient proficiency in another language;

– have a certain degree of knowledge about legal matters;

– have the right habits for orientation in and reflection of his or her working environment, incl. the ability to analyse and communicate with various stakeholders.

During the studies, the graduate will meet with foreign experts in the field of instrument playing, chamber music and the history and repertory of the instrument.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • demonstrate professional knowledge in the field of various styles of contemporary classical music of the 20th century, knowledge of the principles of synthetic sound creations, deep knowledge in the field of instrumental possibilities of musical instrume
  • use the acquired skills in the creation of autonomous works in the field of contemporary classical music of unquestionable quality, publicly performable, showing features of individuality, as well as to present original artistic performance, etc.;
  • apply general skills in cooperation with a leading personality of a creative team (dramaturge, conductor, director), choose a suitable stylistic and genre line and set the means and time schedule to achieve it, communicate with team members, etc.

The graduate can work in the following characteristic professions:

– composer of classical music;

– composer of incidental music;

– music director for music recording in radio, television, on CDs, etc.;

– teacher at all levels of music education (primary art school, conservatory, university) and in various subjects (composition, composition theory, music theory, music history, etc.).

The graduate can work in the following relevant professions:

– music dramaturge in all types of theatres and in cultural institutions;

– music dramaturge of an artistic ensemble;

– music dramaturge in an art agency;

– music dramaturge of a festival.

The study plan consists of compulsory, elective and optional courses and of compulsory artistic study outputs.

A student must obtain 60 credits for each year of studies and finish the studies with a state final examination in selected courses, graduation performance defence and diploma thesis defence.
