Erasmus+ Policy Statement of Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts
Internationalization of the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts (JAMU):
a) Choice of partners:
JAMU is a university where music and performing art is thought and students choose
foreign schools where similar fields of study can be found. The compatibility of study
programmes is important for incoming students too. JAMU students try to choose
partner institutions from Europe and worldwide, that can bring them a new approach
to their studies, knowledge and expand their artistic talent so that they are recognized
by international artists. New agreements are often concluded on the basis of previous
cooperation and contacts through international artistic networks for example The
Association Européenne des Conservatoires, the European League of Institutes of
the Arts and international events such as festivals, conferences or competitions.
Teachers’ contacts abroad are used too. The International Offices search for new
partners regularly.
b) Choice of geographical areas:
JAMU students choose the schools abroad according to the study programmes they
can offer. The university does not have any prior geographical areas within the
Programme and tries to have partners from different countries. Yet there is a
disproportion in outgoing and incoming students. We receive more students from
Spain or Turkey than we send and on contrary we send more students to the United
Kingdom or Germany then we receive. The language in which the studies abroad are
offered plays its role. Almost all JAMU students can speak English fluently (B1) and
some of them have knowledge of German. They can study wherever the study
programmes are thought in English and/or German. For studies in France, Spain,
Portugal or Italy students should know the language of the country, although students
of the Faculty of Music have an advantage, “The language of music” is international.
Studying in Slovakia or Poland is easy for JAMU students because the languages are
similar to Czech.
c) Priorities of internationalization of JAMU in its Long-Term Plan, the most important
objectives and target groups of mobility activities:
• The main trend is at least to continue in the current policy – to exchange 1st
cycle, 2nd
cycle and 3rd
cycle students and develop further cooperation.
• To keep JAMU non-discrimination policy ensure equal access and opportunities to
mobile participants from all backgrounds – support the mentally, physically or socially
challenged people.
• To provide student mobility with the aim of increasing their international flexibility,
professional experience and their position on the labour market.
• To support the participation of teachers and staff workers of JAMU in educational and
special training, seminars, creative workshops, conferences, festivals, panels and
together with students at significant international events.
• To support all types of mobility, teacher mobility and non-teaching staff mobility
especially those are aimed at obtaining further experience and professional
development in the area of teaching and management.
• To increase the number of student mobility in form of study and work placement, to
improve the registration system and the system of recognition of studies at foreign
universities
- Study mobility must not lead to the prolongation of the study period,
- To integrate the concept of a semester of student mobility stay or placement into
the study curriculums in the 1st
, 2nd
and 3rd
cycle of study,
- To adjust and complete the inner system of recognition of courses completed at
foreign universities, ensure consistent records of incoming and out-going
students in the student register, prepare a regulation for this area at the school
level,
- To record consistently subjects completed at foreign university into the Diploma
Supplement.
• To get more incoming mobile participants to study and teach at JAMU, to support
them linguistically, to provide them with information and integrate them into JAMU
activities.
• Increase and improve the range of studies in English and German.
• To consolidate fully an exchange programme in a foreign language for international
students.
d) The development of double/multiple/joint degrees:
The Faculty of Music cooperates with two French institutions in realization of the
Doctoral Study Programme – in the form of a bi-nationally supervised Doctoral Thesis
– Cotutelle. A Cotutelle is offered jointly by two higher education institutions. It allows
the students to get a double/joint PhD Degree delivered and recognized by both
institutions. The research work is conducted by supervisors of both institutions and
PhD students spend part of their studies at the foreign institution. Students enrolled in
a Cotutelle PhD programme get invaluable international research experience. This
cooperation contributes significantly to internationalization of the PhD Study
programme and in the long-term supports the involvement of science and research at
faculties in the European area.
Modernisation:
JAMU will be impacted by the participation in the Programme as follows:
1. Quality of teaching is essential for reaching the required quality of learning, for this
purpose JAMU is going to increase the number of teachers that excel in their areas
by sending them abroad to participate in conferences, workshops, staff training and
other activities at various excellent foreign institutions. Teacher and staff visits will
also lead to further recognition of our institution abroad and more foreign students will
be interested in studying at JAMU. Such activities will lead to us obtaining more
talented students not only from the Czech Republic but also from abroad.
2. After students experience mobility abroad, their linguistic skills will increase. Their
specialization will increase and be enhanced by experiencing new and different
approaches abroad. They will also increase their professional, social and intercultural
skills. Better knowledge and skills of the students mean their better employability.
Students are encouraged to participate in International Competitions and Festivals
which enrich their minds professionally, help them to get international experience and
sometimes can be the starting point of their professional career. All this is necessary
for the students’ future career either at home or abroad.
3. JAMU offers study programmes Lightning Design, Multimedia Composition, Stage
Technology and Radio and TV Dramaturgy and Scriptwriting, which reflect
development in the field of Information and Communication Technology. The
university is going to cooperate with Brno University of Technology and offer the
Audio Ingeneering programme. JAMU intends to increase the number of life-long
learning programmes. There exist preparation, individual courses and Czech
language courses for students from abroad who would like to study programmes
which are only thought in Czech. JAMU also offers a unique study programme Drama
Education for the Deaf as the policy of the university is to support education that
leads to the integration of minority groups. The university also assists students from
lower income backgrounds and provides them with special financial support in case
of need.
4. JAMU is going to increase cross border cooperation within Visegrad countries to
enhance excellence by cooperation in different field projects. We intend to find some
extra funds, The Visegrad Fund grand, to support the cooperation. Other funds
support staff training. There are large international events with a substantial
international impact organized by JAMU the International Festival of Theatre Schools
ENCOUNTER/SETKÁNÍ and The Leoš Janáček International Competition. Both are
supported by the City of Brno, the South Moravian Region, several foundations,
private companies and other sponsors, which signifies the importance and excellence
of the events.
