The specialization is based on the excellent tradition of teaching piano and piano pedagogy at the JAMU Faculty of Music. The content of the specialization follows the previously preferred combination of the Bachelor's degree in Piano Performance and the two-year Master's degree in Piano Performance and Piano Pedagogy. The curriculum of the programme is based on the typical attitude of the student, which naturally changes with maturation. In the first years, the student focuses primarily on his/her pianistic development; after the first year, he/she refines a curriculum together with the teacher, including competitions, concert projects, and internships abroad. Gradually, he becomes familiar with the theory of piano performance, the history of piano playing and pedagogy, and the methodology of piano teaching. In the following years, special subjects and practical pedagogical seminars follow, when the student works with pupils at various levels of piano education, including pre-school age, under the supervision of an experienced teacher. In addition to challenging concert repertoire, the student must master the tribal instructional repertoire. Therefore, the assessed part of the State Final Examination is, in addition to the graduation concert, the thesis, the pedagogical output (teaching a model before the examination committee) and the examination in Didactics of Piano Arts (methodology of piano teaching at higher levels of art education), also a studio CD recording of instructional piano literature. An integral part of the study is practical cooperation with the Methodological Centre led by prof. Alena Vlasáková. It is her personality (a successful teacher at the ZUŠ, Conservatory and both academies, and annual chair of competition juries) that guarantees the high quality of the students' training in piano pedagogy. The students are introduced to the whole spectrum of historical and contemporary trends in the global framework, to Czech and foreign piano schools, to the typical curriculum and methodology of piano education at ZUŠ, conservatories and universities, including the teaching of associated subjects such as compulsory piano, improvisation and playing from the page, etc. Last but not least, they will acquire skills crucial for selection procedures at various levels of art education. During their studies they will gain direct experience in concert, recording and teaching practice. They have the opportunity to publish professional studies, reviews and present their performance and teaching achievements in the online magazine Pianissimo.
This curriculum is overlaid with a piano performance curriculum in which the student prepares to choose a specialization (piano performance and chamber music or piano performance and piano pedagogy) by the end of the third year.
