Course objectives

The course aims to prepare students for independent work with academic literature and for writing the theoretical and methodological sections of their final thesis in the field of drama education and other arts education disciplines. Students will become familiar with the principles of academic writing, information retrieval, critical evaluation of scholarly sources, citation practices, and academic integrity.


The course places particular emphasis on the practical stages of preparing a final thesis, including the formulation of research topics and questions, working with academic literature, selecting appropriate research methods, and developing academic writing skills. Students will also gain a basic understanding of qualitative and quantitative research approaches and their application in arts education research.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the principles of academic writing and scholarly communication;
  • search for, evaluate, and effectively use academic sources;
  • correctly cite, paraphrase, and compile bibliographic references according to academic standards;
  • formulate research topics, research aims, and research questions;
  • distinguish between basic qualitative and quantitative research approaches;
  • select appropriate research methods according to the nature of a research project;
  • design simple research instruments, such as interview guides, questionnaires, or observation protocols;
  • produce academic texts that meet the formal and content requirements of a final thesis;
  • critically reflect on ethical aspects of academic writing and educational research.

    • Assessment methods

    The course is completed by a graded assessment.


    Successful completion requires regular active participation, continuous completion of assigned tasks, and submission of a set of preparatory materials for the final thesis. These materials include a proposed research topic, research aims and questions, a literature review, a sample of academic writing, a proposed methodological approach, and a draft of an appropriate research instrument.


    Assessment focuses on students' ability to work with academic sources, apply correct citation practices, revise their work based on feedback, and produce academically appropriate written texts.
