The aim of the course is to offer students the opportunity to develop their English language skills beyond what is otherwise provided in compulsory courses, with a focus on academic English in the context of theatre and theatre studies. The course therefore targets the introduction of language phenomena at the C1 level and above. - Learning outcomes
- Learning Outcomes
Upon completing the course, students will be able to actively and passively use more advanced structures and systems of the English language. This applies to understanding both written and spoken texts. They will be able to comprehend specialized texts in English. Actively, students will be capable of expressing opinions on more complex topics, for example in debates about productions at the Encounter festival, or in essays on specialized subjects. They will also acquire advanced presentation skills, enabling them to perform confidently and effectively in front of an audience and to navigate professional environments, including conferences and seminars. - Syllabus
- Syllabus: 1st semester
- Pronunciation – Ends of words; Shorter and longer vowels; How to find accent in longer words
- Vocabulary – Theatre General Vocabulary : Concepts
- Grammar – Verbs of suggestion; Commas; Have, do, make, take
- Reading – Resistance
- Writing – Essay as an exam
- Exam prep – Cloze passages, speaking tasks
- 2nd semester
- Corrections from essay (exam)
- Vocabulary – Theatre General Vocabulary: Objects and parts of a theatre
- Grammar – Indirect speech and questions; Transitive and intransitive verb pairs (lie/lay etc.); Modal verbs in the past, modals of obligation
- Reading – Review of Grand Budapest Hotel
- Exam Prep – Cloze passages, speaking tasks.

- Vocabulary – Theatre General Vocabulary: People; Presenting materials + linking words and phrases
- Grammar – Clift sentences; Participle clauses

The course combines several teaching methods, including text analysis, pronunciation drills, controlled as well as free language exercises, and the practical application of acquired language forms in the production of an essay and a written version of a presentation on a chosen topic. Emphasis will also be placed on active student participation, for example through discussions of selected academic texts or in the development of presentation skills. - Assessment methods
