Prerequisites
Successful completion of the first year of bachelor study programme. Succesful completion of courses: Stage management, Project management, Introduction to Cultural Policy, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Law 1 and Law 2.

Course objectives
To acquaint students with the basics of management, the sense of managerial work and the roles played by managers in artistic institutions or artistic project teams. The goal is to go from a specific (self-management, family or a group management) to a systemic management concept (management in institutions and project management within institutions). Emphasis is placed on management in both semesters to prepare students for lessons of leadership in the next year.
The aim of this course is not to memorize a structured system of management theory but to apply selected principles and procedures that are useful for the theatrical production work.
Through the compulsory reading and reviews students are able to recognize gradually the difference between management and leadership and are learning to understand that the future leadership position is linked to the setting of inner environment of a leader, his/her ability to take responsibility and make the right decision at the right time.
Learning outcomes
Completing this semester the graduate is able:
-describe sequential and continuous management functions (system theory of management) and their significance for their own practical production activities.
- perceive the interconnection of organizational function and human resources management,
- define tools for assessment of co-workers and understand the career strategy including options in the arts sector,
- understand the importance of human being, personality traits, work overload and conflict of roles in managing co-workers and teams,
- to understand motivation and stimulation, feature theory, the styles of negotiation of co-workers, and the advantages or disadvantages of co-decision,
- to distinguish management from leadership and to perceive the coherence of these approaches, to understand the issues of pluralism, team leadership and political negotiation and action,
- apply communication skills in the context of leadership including active listening, define the communication process, communication flows and obstacles in communication,
- to know the sequential control function, the terminology of control, the process of setting control standards and the feedback system,
- to know control and controlling tools and weaknesses in control processes.

Syllabus
  • 1. Organization and management of meetings. The art of writing the agenda and meeting minutes. Communication during a meeting in the context of artistic operations.
  • 2. Human resources. Identification of requirements, setting of work, organizational structure and jobs. Human resources planning and selection of co-workers.
  • 3. Staff assessment (staffing). Traditional assessment, evaluation with respect to verifiable targets, systematic evaluation and other rating systems. Rewards and stress of senior executives. Remuneration and conditions of work. Occupational strategy.
  • 4. Evaluation and remuneration from the perspective of a leader. Human factors in management and leadership. Personality, knowledge, skills, experience. Characteristics of personality. Role, psychological contract, role overload, conflict of roles. Organizational policy.
  • 5. Leadership in relation to motivation and style of negotiation. Motivation and stimulation. Theory of leadership (Likert). Style of the subordinate. Co-decision.
  • 6. Leadership: definitions, elements, approaches and styles. Situational approaches. Types of leaders, their strength and influence.
  • 7. Plurality of leadership, team leadership and political negotiation. Team and an individual.
  • 8. Communication and leadership. Process of communicationn and communication skills. Communication skills. The art of listening. Obstacles in communication. Presentation skills.
  • 9. Control. Concepts, standards, function of the control process. Feedback system.
  • 10. Control and controlling tools. Activities and weaknesses of control processes.

Teaching methods
Form of teaching: 1 hour of lecture, 1 hour of seminar (seminar and lecture part are interconnected according to the strategy of a specific two-hour course)
Teaching methods: lecture, work with text, work with painting, discussion methods, individual work of students, case study.
Assessment methods
Assessment is based on the oral exam. To pass the exam, the student must meet 80 % of attendance at the lectures, the absence must be excused via e-mail. Before passing an exam student must porcess two reviews of publications (Covey S.: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change and Plamínek J.: Leadership of people, teams and companies.)

The oral exam is without preparation and student draws two questions.
The solving of partial assignments for the seminar part of the course is a matter of course.
