Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide students with an overview of the development of scenography from the so-called first theater reform and the period around 1900 to the beginning of the 21st century. To familiarize students with important theater creators and ensembles of the period, the characteristic features of individual artistic movements and styles, both in traditional theater and performance. Emphasis is also placed on understanding the basic theoretical concepts of scenography and the possibilities for its presentation in and outside of exhibition spaces.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will:
- have knowledge of the history and theory of theater, scenography, and visual arts, all in the broader context of the period;
- able to identify important scenographers, their creative concepts, and their most significant works;
- able to formulate concepts of individual art movements and apply this knowledge to the visual component of theater productions;
- be able to describe the transformations of theatrical and performative costumes, linking them to changes in the perception of the body in the context of the period;
- be able to explain the theoretical concepts of scenography of a given period;
Syllabus
Scenography – changes in the meaning of the term in the context of 20th and 21st century theoretical concepts. The first and second theater reforms – definitions, personalities, works. Modernism and its legacy for contemporary theater and scenography. Costumes in traditional theater and performance. Postmodern scenography and postdramatic theater. The use of technology in scenography. The Prague Quadrennial and opportunities for presenting scenography.
