- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to introduce final year students to the broad field of cultural theory and history outside of the theatre context, however, from a perspective based on the requirements for expanding knowledge in the field of cultural production. The course will primarily focus on the theory of culture and art with overlaps into anthropology, psychology and ethology. Emphasis will be placed on theorizing about the functions of the arts, especially the role they play as a catalyst for group cohesion. This is not only in traditional hunter-gatherer societies, but also in contemporary pop culture.
- Learning outcomes
- Students will gain a rich theoretical foundation regarding the study of human culture as a distinctive human adaptation and gain a much broader understanding of the human behavior we refer to as art and how it is currently studied in an interdisciplinary perspective.
- Syllabus
- The structure of the course will be structured around selected topics:
- 1) Introduction to the theory of culture as central to human adaptation to varying environments;
- 2) Introduction to anthropological and psychological approaches to the study of artistic behavior;
- 3) Application of these approaches to contemporary pop culture - a case study of contemporary American rap.

- Lessons are in the form of lectures (50%) and seminars (50%). Lectures will consist of presentations, text and image analysis, discussions, audiovisual and educational excursions.
- Assessment methods
- Credit will be awarded on the basis of an oral colloquium which will test the knowledge of the material discussed.

- The aim is to bring students to learn about the extensive field of culture outside of the theatrical context. However, with a perspective focused on the field of cultural production. Course will primarily focus on the history of art from its beginnings to the present, and milestones in the development of individual artistic styles will be presented on the most important works. The students should thus obtain a basic general overview of art and culture. By searching for links between historical styles and their variations in the present, course reveals a wide field of culture to ensure the student is easier to orientate in the current world of art and cultural trends.
- Learning outcomes
- Student will be able to orientate in basic fields of art and cultural theories after completing the course. Student should be able to distinguish the most prominent artistic styles and correctly incorporate them into their historical, political and social contexts.

- 1) Basic concepts and theories of art;
- 2) Art until 1900;
- 3) Art after 1900;
- 4) Film as a new medium;
- 5) Art and politics;
- 6) Postmodernism, Pop culture and the Internet.
